Alaska Railbelt Energy Coalition (AREC)

Alaska Railbelt Energy Coalition (AREC)

Location: Alaska

Grant Amount: $75,000

AREC works to unite various interest groups on electric utility-related issues to create a decarbonized energy democracy for and driven by Alaskans in the Railbelt region, which produces and consumes 70% of the state’s energy. The Rural Climate Partnership is supporting AREC to engage advocates at the grassroots and industry level to create pro-renewable and pro-transparency utility cooperatives that help rural communities regain control over their local resources. With a track record of winning nonpartisan member-owner co-op elections, AREC will build off this success to provide targeted candidate recruitment and educational and empowerment opportunities for rural communities.
