The 2020 Farmers Cooperative

Location: Virginia

Grant Amount: $130,000

The 2020 Farmers Cooperative, established in 2020 in the rural community of Virginia, Halifax County, operates on a principle of equitable agricultural opportunities for Black, historically underserved, and small-scale farmers. This cooperatively owned farming organization emphasizes a transparent governance model where farmer members collectively make decisions, highlighting a commitment to democracy, accountability, and shared power in their operations. At the heart of the Cooperative’s mission is the advancement of sustainable agricultural practices, such as the adoption of cover crops with both ecological and commercial benefits. To support this, the Cooperative has adopted a shared equipment model, reducing costs and barriers for individual farmers. With support from the RCP, the Cooperative will enhance the economic viability of rural BIPOC farmers while also advancing climate resilience and sustainable farming practices.
